More New York Dunns Discovered

Beth Shulman of New York discovered the Facebook page affiliated with this blog, 'Descendants of Emanuel Don' at the beginning of July.

These photos have come from Beth who is the Granddaughter of Harry and Mollie Dunn, through their daughter Mildred and her husband Marty Shulman. She asked if I could help identify who the people in the photo's were. With the help of Frances Street and Dianne Mathews, this was possible.

Beth wrote to me with this mystery....

"This story has been haunting me! My mother, Mildred (Dunn) Shulman passed away in 1981 when I was 26 years old. she was a loyal family member and an excellent historian, but I never really had the chance to ask many important questions. Attached are pictures of a visit she and my dad, Marty Shulman took to visit British relatives in August, 1979. I really don't know who these people are, but perhaps you do. My mother is pictured with them."

I sent a circular email round the extended family and Frances and Diane managed to help with the following information.

Frances said " Aunty Mary (Horne) is the one in the middle (with glasses) next to her on her left is Lydia, her daughter -in-law and Stephen Horne (her son, my cousin) with their 3 children. I'm not too sure of the other ladies as to who is Mildred & who is the other one, I'm sure someone will know".

Diane added that "the other lady in the vertical striped top is mine and Harold's and Mother, Frances, sister of Auntie Mary. It was taken in St Annes, near Blackpool, where Mum and Auntie Mary were living in the late 1960s. Obviously the other unidentified women were from America visiting Mum and Auntie Mary at the time."

So to clarify, from left to right, the top photo shows: Frances Jacobs (nee Dunn), her sister Mary Horne (nee Dunn), Lydia Horne, Simon Horne, Steven Horne, and below them are Sasha and Mathew.

The middle photo shows Mildred Shulman (nee Dunn), with her English / Chilean first cousins Mary Horne and Frances Jacobs.

The bottom photo shows from left to right: Mildred, Frances, Mary, Lydia, Simon, Stephen and at the bottom, Sasha and Mathew.

This is what Beth said of her self and her family:

I came across this page by chance online. My name is Beth Shulman. My mother was Mildred Dunn, daughter of Harry and Molly Dunn. She married Martin Shulman. I have a sister named Joan. I have many photos and plenty of information to share. I noticed that someone thought my mother never married, and wanted to correct that. Harry and Charles were very close, and we spent many family gatherings with Uncle Charlie, Aunt Rose, Cousin Arnie and his boys. I am shocked to see that Charlie's middle name was Jacob because our son's middle name is Charles, after my great-uncle Charlie. Believe it or not, his first name is Jacob. What an amazing coincidence!

Where are you from? I need to spend more time reading your blog to understand all the connections.

So, here is my branch of the tree:
Mildred Dunn married Martin Shulman. They had two girls, Beth and Joan. They also had a son, Paul, who died when he was 5 1/2 years old. Beth Shulman married John Ment. We have two children, Jake Shulman-Ment and Maya Shulman-Ment. Jake is married to Eleonore Weill. John and I live in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Our children all live in Brooklyn, NY.

Joan Shulman married Bob Mayerson. They have two children, Molly Mayerson and Caleb Mayerson. Molly is married to Joseph Moen. They all live in the Boston, Massachusetts area.

We are getting together this weekend to celebrate our dad's 95th birthday!

Thanks so much for all the great research. I look forward to exploring it.

I should add that Jake, 30 years old, is a professional violinist. His speciality is Klezmer, as well as other eastern European folk styles such as Gypsy, Hungarian, Romanian and Balkan. He has lived in Hungary, Romania and France but is now based in Brooklyn. He speaks fluent Yiddish!
So much to share,
Thanks so much for all the communication! My mother is the one all the was on the left in both photos. She was there visiting with my dad who took the pictures. I don't know anyone else in them, so there is still one unidentified woman!
I assume these people were first cousins of my mom's as it seems that their father was Harry's brother -correct? There are so many names and many siblings from that generation. The tree is confusing!
No hurry updating the blog. I just wanted to set the record straight that my mother did indeed have a marriage and children.
Since all of this, I have had some email communication with Erin and a nice, long phone conversation with her father, Tom. We knew each other as children but haven't spoken in many years. It was a pleasure to reconnect. I hope he enjoyed knowing that our son was named after his grandfather, Charles! Erin lives near my sister, Joan and her family, so I imagine we will be meeting sometime soon.

I see you are interested in music, so you may want to watch some Youtube videos of my son, Jake Shulman-Ment when you have a chance. Here is one but there are many more
